Review: Monument 14

Monument 14 Monument 14 by Emmy Laybourne
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I loved the fact that so many people / the children trapped in the superstore bound together. Of course there were bad times and a jerk or 2, but the story is most touching because the teens have to suddenly become the grown ups and take care of the elementary children that are stranded in the superstore with them during the monster hail storm their school bus driver saved them from & then from the toxic chemicals that were later released into the air. Some of the teens show real bravery and concern in taking care of each other and trying to be patient and supporting to the young kids.

The kids mess up by being kind and finding a way to let in 2 adults who are in need of supplies. They realize they can not all stay there in the store and wait to be rescued because one of them has become injured. Depending on which blood type the people are, they react differently to the chemical poisons in the air. Some just will not be able to reproduce later while others turn to blood thirsty killers.

The group have to discover a way to try to survive. They wait and go through many mixed emotions in the store and do a lot of creative thinking to make their somewhat lucky situation work considering they at least have shelter, food, / a store full of supplies.

There is a lot of action and tension as these teen & elementary children go through this disaster without adult guidance. Emmy Laybourne successfully portrays how the same horrible situation is processed and dealt with by different personalities. I like that there is a Boy Scout in the bunch who does a good job of looking out for others and coming up with ways to make their survival easier and more efficient.

Lots of surprises, action, and suspense ... After all of the working together & often stressing out on each other will they actually make it through the disaster? Can't wait to read book 2!
