Barry Ryan, an artist and successful sculptor, finds out that he is terminally ill. This search will tie him to a truly terrifying future, but he is not to be deterred.
Engaging the assistance of his sister and her boyfriend, Barry heads to Auraria, driven to find answers. Auraria is a ghost town, a mysterious and abandoned place that holds secrets of its own, buried and hidden since the infamous Gold Rush, and Barry’s not quite ready for what he’s about to discover in this haunted place.
Once Barry, his sister, and her boyfriend cross the city limits of Auraria, the rules change. They fall beneath the veil, into a place where the bizarre is the normal and rules those who are living, who have become little more than prey, trapped in a mindless, ever-changing, and unending web. Generations of conflict come to the harsh light of day here, and Barry and his companions must struggle to survive in the new reality that isn’t. The echoes of the past are lethal beneath the veil, in this place where the living are not meant to survive, because the dead have never left.

Beneath the Veil, by William McNally, is so super scary it actually gave me nightmares. I am not joking. I love that an artist is our main character and his loving adopted sister is headstrong and determined to help him at all costs. It is so freaky that they can not get out because the roads just lead back to the center of town. There is a butt load of freaky in this book & even some red neck co-civilians that are hilarious.
Our main characters are find themselves in a very strange place "GHOST TOWN" TRAPPED of course. They will have a had time finding a way out of this mess that countless before them have attempted before. The "ghost town" element was awesome cuz I love ghost towns too.

Our main character Barry ends up in a ghost town looking for his biological family to save himself from a sickness. Barry finds out some very disturbing news about his family. The whole town is disturbing and horrifying. There are of course some good guys that all have their own quirky personalities. The characters are very well developed and you get a sense of the amount of craziness each one is experiencing because of this impossible situation that they are determined to survive die trying.
It is hard to say how amazing and thrilling this book was without giving away some of the details you will want to find for yourself. Among all of the scary stuff it is very heart touching and a testament to human's will to survive even the most impossible and horrific conditions.
